In 1884, the same year Charles Cooper proposed the idea of a mutual society to enable ordinary people to borrow money to build their own homes, Greenwich in London was established as the universal time meridian of longitude, leading to GMT being used worldwide as a standard time independent of location.

Nationwide’s Internet fridge prototype was developed in 2004. It had video guides to buying/selling your home and also allowed users to check lottery numbers, play music according to user profiles, browse M&S collections and order goods online, publish photos, and listen to audio books. It was created to demonstrate Nationwide’s innovation capability when we were pitching to put Nationwide ATMs in M&S stores.

The Interact self-service kiosk was introduced in 1995, and both the PDA version of our internet bank and TV internet banking followed in 2001.

Believed to be the world's most advanced branch-based self-service multimedia technology at the time, the Interact touch-screen system was available in branch locations and public areas such as shopping centres and railway stations from 1995. The innovative system used video, images and sound to create new ways for members to find out about products and services.

1971 was a year of firsts… including the first One Day International cricket match played between England and Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground. As well as this, the first ever pocket calculator was invented by Texas Instruments, Intel released the first single chip computer microprocessor, and the first CAT scan was done.

1971 also saw the invention of internet chat rooms, email, floppy disks, and it cost just £2 for a weekend ticket to the very first Reading Festival!

In 1990, the latest banking innovation was Automated Telephone Banking. However, many members were still on analogue exchanges and so Nationwide distributed Touchtone keypad devices for those who used rotary dial phones so they could take advantage of the automated service.

Nationwide launched the UK's first retail internet banking service in 1997 and over 13,000 customers registered to use the new service in its first year. 20 years later, we have over 5.5 million customers registered for online and mobile banking.

In 2014 we trialled Smartwatch banking by offering a real-time Quick Balance feature. For Apple Watch users, it’s now possible to make in-store purchases with Apple Pay using a Nationwide debit or credit card.

In 1998, we trialled iris recognition, way ahead of the biometrics curve. The technology was installed in two counter positions and one cash machine for around 1,200 customers and employees.

The Automated member signatures trial ran from 2000 to 2003 and enabled branches to take electronic signatures on a signature pad for current accounts.
