It’s been a typically busy period for Telefónica O2 Ireland and Manx Telecom. Here, we give you all the latest news in our regular round-up section.

Web extras have Clear benefit

Customers who sign up to the O2 Clear post-pay contract can now choose from three new free extras.

The extras, which are available on contracts of €50 plus, include the option of 3GB worth of free broadband access.

Customers simply plug their modem-equipped phone into their laptop or computer and use it as a modem to surf for free with a limit of 3GB.

Or they can choose to watch Sky TV or O2 TV on their phone with a limit of 500MB, thanks to a free subscription.

The new extras join a list of fantastic free options available to O2 Clear customers, including free anytime landline calls or free texts to any network.

In good company for workplace awards

Telefónica O2 Ireland has come second in the Best Work Places in Ireland 2010 Awards, which were published by the Irish Independent.

The company also clinched first place as Best Workplace in the Telecoms Sector.

National College of Ireland

Telefónica O2 Ireland is partnering with the National College of Ireland to support students with disabilities.

Partnership benefits support services

Telefónica O2 Ireland has teamed up with the National College of Ireland to sponsor disability support services at the college.

The services will be driven forward by a student support officer who will guide, encourage and support students with disabilities in their journey through higher education.

Telefónica O2 Ireland’s chief operating officer Jude Lynch said: "Embracing diversity is a hugely important part of how we do business.

“NCI will be creating these services to provide academic and personal support on an intensive one-to-one basis to students with disabilities to ensure they realise their full potential and we’re delighted to be playing a part in that.”

Widgets help personalise site

O2 customers in Ireland now have their own personalised homepage on www.o2.ie

Called My Widgets, it is a response to feedback from customers who said they would like a more engaging and personal experience with O2 online.

As the name suggests, as well as providing a place for news, reviews, products and service, the site also gives visitors access to a host of innovative and helpful widgets (useful applications and links to information from top providers such as RTE, Sky Sports, IRFU, Wikipedia and many others), all in one place.

The swap-out team braves some snowy weather.

Swap-out is no wash out

A huge team effort in atrocious conditions helped Manx Telecom improve coverage and double its data download speeds, as well as better preparing it for convergence.

A massive swap-out operation earlier this year saw equipment updated at 31 sites across the Isle of Man and 14 new sites added during a three-week window. The result? A 3G network based on 45 locations.

Sean Dickinson of the Next Generation Network team explained: “Changes in the winter weather meant that one moment we were on top of a freezing mountain and the next we were trudging heavy equipment through muddy, or even snowy, fields in the dead of night. It was hard work and the timescales were tight.”

The effort involved five Manx Telecom teams and representatives from contractor Alcatel-Lucent.

Community causes win big

Eleven community causes on the Isle of Man will benefit from the support of Manx Telecom after successful applicants for the 2010 It’s Our Community initiative were named at a recent awards ceremony.

It’s Our Community was launched in 2008 in conjunction with another company, Mannin Media.

The aim of the initiative is to support groups, clubs and societies from a broad cross-section of the community.

Announcing that the scheme would continue for at least another year, Manx Telecom CEO Chris Hall said: “The original charter for It’s Our Community was to inspire us all to make a positive change to the communities in which we live.”

telephone book cover

The Manx Telecom directory was designed with the environment and Isle of Man heritage in mind.

Publications preserve language and environment

When Manx Telecom issued its 2010 telephone directory, full-colour e-business guide and online directory this January, it kept a keen eye on preserving the environment and the island’s heritage.

The paper directory includes Gaelic phrases on the cover and throughout, while a host of improvements aim to minimise the book’s impact on the environment.

A change of printer and a reduced print run, made possible by increasing awareness of the online directory, has been complemented by improved recycling methods for old books.
